“Seresta” in 1989 was my first group choreography. It’s based on a Venezuelan waltz. At that time I was influenced by the rhythms of jazz and blues. Everyday experiences were my starting point. Some pieces are based on human relationships and everyday situations. Some times, the choreography has a story, becomes a fairy tale and other times it’s just the joy of dancing - just dance, no story. So, my first production was a mosaic of choreographies.
And then, I “met” Piazzola, and I fell in love with him. This love afair that started in 1991 is still going strong to this day... The choreography takes the form of a story, with a specific plot, a beginning, middle and end... (“People”). My personal life and experiences formed the structure of most of my Piazzola pieces. (“Astor, my love”, “Duo de amor”).
The dancers play a fundemental part in my work: I choose the role that they will interpret, based on their personality, physical ability and artistic temperament, so that the marriage of music, movement and soul create the best possible aesthetic result.
Next, came opera. I immerse myself in it, it inspires me, I find myself transported to a different reality.
Things got rough! I couldn’t find a way to approach it’s magnificence. Opera is not like other styles that I have tackled before. I use theatre and it’s expressive tools as a resource. The phrase “interpretation of the role” is a must. In expressing what I have to say as a choreographer, music, prose, silence intermingle... artistry and technique, drama and humor combine to serve this intricate masterpiece of music and prose. The libretto becomes dance, the music becomes dance, life passes through the sieve of aesthetics and art (“Rigoletto”).
Then comes my “fatal” meeting with tango! I abandon myself to it’s rhythms, I study it, I follow it, I enter deep into it’s essence, it inpires me! I start choreographing it from it’s most classical to it’s most modern and abstract form. Elements of classical and modern dance combined with original tango, serve my need to express, to sketch the experiences of my own life and that of others.
During this whole creative process, this struggle and happiness, whatever the result might have been, I had the warm support and companionship of my collaborators, my family and my dancers. An essential part of my inspiration, the dancers with their technical abilities, musicality, personality and dedication, helped my dreams to become reality and gave me the opportunity to share them with the audience.
And the journey goes on...
